What is Boniva used for?

This medicine is indicated for the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.

When should Boniva not be taken?

Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to this or similar medicines or to any ingredient present in this medicine.

What precautions should I follow when taking Boniva?

Before using this medicine, tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine if you are taking any herbal products, if you are taking blood thinners if you have stomach problems if you have peptic ulcers if you have any other medical condition like liver or kidney function impairment, heart ot lung problem,

What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Boniva?

This medicine may cause may cause upper gastrointestinal disorders such as dysphagia, esophagitis and esophageal or gastric ulcer.

What are the side effects of Boniva?

Most severe: An allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives), difficulty or pain when swallowing, pain or burning under the ribs or in the back, chest pain; or new or worsening heartburn

Most common: Diarrhea, nausea or upset stomach, pain in extremities (arms or legs).

How should I take Boniva?

How much medicine you take and how often you take it depend on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of the medicine you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Do not stop taking this medicine without checking with your health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking this medicine. Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, contact your health care provider or pharmacist. Take this medicine first thing in the morning at least 1 hour (60 minutes) before you eat or drink anything other than plain water, or take any other medicine. Take each dose with a full glass (6 to 8 ounces) of tap water or bottled water. Do not crush, chew, or suck the pills. Swallow them whole. After taking this medicine wait at least 1 hour before lying down (you may sit, stand, or do normal activities like read the newspaper or take a walk) or eating or drinking anything except for plain water or taking other medicines including vitamins, calcium, or antacids (take your vitamins, calcium, and antacids at a different time of the day from the time when you take this medicine.

How should Boniva be stored?

Store in a dry place at room temperature between 59° - 86°F. Keep out of reach of children and pets
