Eating Meat Linked to Weight Gain

Filed under: nutrition — Tags: calories, diet, exercise, meat, nutrition, Protein, weight loss — John @ 5:43 pm

A European study found that a higher intake of meat may result in weight gain. Processed meats (sausages) were associated with the greatest risk of gaining weight. This research shows that high-protein diets may not actually help in the long run.

Even after researchers took overall calorie intake, physical activity, and other factors into consideration, the weight gain associated with eating meat was still quite significant. Researchers are not quite certain why eating meat may cause weight gain in people eating a regular number of calories.

While eating regular portions of meat can cause weight gain, another thing to look at is many of us eat too much meat to begin with. Portion sizes are often much smaller than many people are aware of. Lack of proper information then results in eating unnecessary and unhealthy amounts of meat.

Meat can be substituted from our diets; vegetarians have obviously already proven this. I’m am not saying stop eating meat altogether. However, you may wish to substitute meats occasionally for other foods, such as an egg, vegetables, etc. What is important is that you find a healthy and balanced diet that you enjoy.

Why Americans go to Canadian Pharmacies for Prescription Drugs

Despite being one of the world’s most powerful nations, the United States has the world’s highest drug prices. What’s very disappointing is that the cost of prescription drugs isn’t marginally higher in the United States, they are quite significantly higher.

I understand that research and development is very costly, but at the same time, some of these costs are simply ludicrous. In some ways, it is almost a type of discrimination against the poor. If you can’t afford the cost of prescription drugs, then you might die. That’s the sad truth in many cases.

Perhaps an effective price control system is needed in the United States. As it is now, millions of American citizens are travelling across the border to purchase their prescription medications from Canadian pharmacies or going online to buy these drugs from online pharmacies at a fraction of the cost.

However, pharmaceutical companies have many lobbyists in Washington, DC, to prevent any change that could be damaging to their profits. The pharmaceutical industry spent roughly $855 million, which is more than any other industry, on lobbying activities from 1998 to 2006. If you’re waiting for drug prices to be lowered by any significant margin, I wouldn’t hold your breath. It’ll be one of those, “I’ll believe it when I see it” type of moments. Until then, more and more Americans will search for alternatives, such as Canadian pharmacies.

Get Your Summer Body

Filed under: weight loss — Tags: bathing suit, beach body, diet, exercise, nutrition, summer, weight loss — John @ 9:18 pm

With summer here, it’s time to grab the bathing suit and go to the beach for some fun in the sun. However, there are many of us that are ashamed to show our bodies in a bathing suit. For some it’s the belly they have an issue with, while others hate their legs. In order to get in shape for the summer, you have to balance your eating and exercise, and you must be consistent.

Many of us overeat far too often. Every once and a while isn’t so bad, but when it is happening every day, there’s a problem. Try to limit the amount of food you eat every sitting, but increase the number of meals you eat per day. You should try to have 4-5 small meals throughout the day, but try not to overeat. Also, make sure you are eating quality foods. If you are eating 4 or 5 small meals a day, but all of those meals are from McDonalds, it really won’t help your situation. Eating smart is one half of the weight loss puzzle.

If you’ve got the eating part down, then you need to remember to exercise. When you do exercise, do not limit yourself to only doing cardio, or only lifting weights. You need to use both to help get rid of that extra weight. Try to fit in some cardio 4 or 5 times a few and weight lifting 2 or 3 times a week. It’s important to remember that you shouldn’t only focus on one body part when lifting weights. You need to work out all of your muscles.

Consistency is the foundation of losing weight. You have to be consistent and develop a routine in order for you to be successful. Try and find exercises that you enjoy, as these will probably make it easier for you to want to work out.

Teens Technology Obsession May Cause Mental Health Problems

Filed under: mental health — Tags: computers, exercise, internet, mental health, overall health, phones, technology, wasting time — Candace @ 10:18 pm

  • One-in-ten teens spend over 7 hours a day in front of a screen.
  • It is recommended by health officials as two hours maximum for children over two.
  • In 2009, people 15 years old and older watched an average of 2.8 hours of TV per day. Socializing in person only had an average of 45 minutes per day.
  • Teenagers spend an average of 31 hours online per week.
  • In 2004, only 18 percent of 12 year olds owned a cell phone; now 58 percent own one.

Because of the isolation that technology provides technology may affect our mental health. Human interaction is needed! Human touch has so much power and impact. Something as simple as interacting with a complete stranger can be significantly beneficial to our mental health. Isolation has mental consequences and can affect work, family, and personal growth. Often depression is a result of isolation.

Gambling is also something mental health related. Although this is less common in teens, it is still an issue. Gambling can lead to lying, and debt. This can cause a lot of stress in the family and network of the person.

Not only is the overuse of technology having a negative impact on mental health, but physical health is also a concern. It is feared that teens are not getting an adequate amount of exercise. In a survey conducted on numerous students it was found that 8.5 percent of students said they had no physical activity for a week before taking the survey. 7 days without exercise is extremely unhealthy, compared to the 30 minutes a day teens should be getting.

TV, the computer, and cell phones are all wonderful advances in technology, but without balance out in keeping fit and social, they could pose harm to our health.

Risks of Ear Piercings

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: allergies, body piercings, ear peircings, infections piercings, piercings — Candace @ 9:51 pm

Piercings aren’t scarce; nearly 73% of women have had their ears pierced. Even simple ear piercings come with risks. When skin is punctured, infections are quite common. In order to avoid an infection you should always wash your hands thoroughly before touching your piercing.

Allergic reactions are another concern. You can be allergic to the type of metal the earring is made from, or you can be allergic to the cleaning solution. Usually, if people are allergic to anything ear-piercing related, they are allergic to nickel earrings. Stainless steel is the safest choice with the least amount of people allergic to it. After an ear piercing you shouldn’t swim for about a month. Chorine is used to keep bacteria out of pools, but both bacteria and chlorine affect piercings and can easily cause an infection. Natural bodies of water carry protozoa in them which can also cause an infection.

Scaring is also a risk that comes with piercings. Keloids are thick scars which are much more noticeable than the typical scar. The people who are at a highest risk for getting keloids are those with a dark skin complexion who had their ears pierced after turning 11 years old.

Cartilage piercings in the ear are much more painful, dangerous, and take longer to heal. The healing process can take between four months to a year. Quite often cartilage piercings end up in inflamed skin with swelling and a burning sensation.

Ear piercing guns are not recommended. I got my ears pierced at 7 with a piercing gun and I suffered a painful infection for 3 months. These guns work similarly to a staple or nail gun. Ear piercing guns are unsanitary and risky and it is recommended that you use the needle procedure rather than a piercing gun.

Behind Bug Spray – DEET

The summer brings great joys: beach weather, tanning, and flourishing plant life, but along with the good things summer brings an abundance of insect infestation. These bugs bite, sting, and otherwise irritate everyone trying to enjoy the great outdoors and the cheery weather. Thankfully you can prevent these pesky bugs from irritating you and you can ease the pain of any bites you already have.

Created in World War II, a pesticide known as DEET helped protect soldiers from the plethora of bugs that would have otherwise eaten the soldiers alive. This repellent developed a bad reputation because in high concentrations or when DEET is used on a daily basis for years it can cause harmful side effects. It was discovered that DEET increased the risk of seizures and neurological conditions. Although this may sound dangerous it is actually much less of an issue than it seems. Only 1 in 100,000,000 people experience a problem with DEET. The chances of getting hit by lightning are significantly higher: 1 in 280,000 people. In fact, you are more likely to become president (1 in 10,000,000) than to experience a problem with DEET.

To apply a DEET based bug spray, simply spray it onto your exposed skin and your clothing. It is recommended that children use only 10 percent concentration of DEET and adults use a maximum of 30 percent. The percentage is merely related to the length of time DEET will last, not its efficiency. DEET will keep mosquitoes from landing on you, and will also keep away ticks! On top of this, DEET also keeps away chiggers – these are tiny insects that give a rash. DEET based sprays are currently available and most over the counter insect repellants.

If you already have bites you need treatment for over the counter pain killers are the best way to ease any pain. Tylenol, Benadryl and Advil are all helpful in easing pain caused by insect bites.

8 Ways to Prevent Arthritis

Filed under: Arthritis — Candace @ 7:35 pm

Arthritis plagues 1 in 6 Canadians. This dehabilitating disease causes joint pain and inflammation. Fortunately there are certain things you can do to prevent yourself from getting arthritis or stopping arthritis from spreading or worsening.

    • Avoid joint stress – Avoid tasks that add pressure to your joints. For example, lifting groceries puts strain on your joints. These types of strenuous activities can worsen your arthritis.
    • Watch your weight – Try to obtain and maintain a low weight. The heavier you are the more stress is on your joints and muscles from carrying that weight.
    • Vitamin  C – Research has proven that vitamin C can help reduce the danger of arthritis. Oranges are a terrific source of vitamin C.
    • Know your stuff – Research arthritis and learn more about how you can reduce the risk of getting arthritis.
    • Keep a positive outlook – Research has proven that optimistic people are generally healthier. Laugh a lot and don’t take yourself too seriously. Always look on the bright side of things.
    • Choose good shoes – Buy expensive and supportive shoes. Keep good posture when sitting and standing. This will take some of the pressure and tension off your joints. Also try to buy a firm mattress and avoid sleeping and relaxing on surfaces that are too soft.
    • Clothe properly – If the weather is cold wear warm clothing to keep your joint defend your joints. Try long underwear and thick gloves.
    • Drink water – Water is necessary in joint lubrication, so drink up and avoid arthritis.

      Vacation Time Health Tips

Filed under: travel tips — Nicole @ 7:34 pm

travel tips, vacation tips, health tipsWith summer fast approaching, you may be planning to take vacation in a faraway place – where only the sun, the sky and your Facebook updates can reach you. While you’re out in the sun, or the city, depending on what type of vacation you’re looking for, here are some tips to help you stay healthy and experience your vacation to the fullest.

      On the Plane…

If you need an airplane to get where you’re going, air travel companies recommend that you plan ahead, by making sure that your immunizations are current, in order to ensure that you do not contract any viruses during your trip. Airline travel companies additionally recommend that you reserve your seat according to your health needs. If you are prone to air sickness, reserve a seat by the wing, or if you experience motion sickness, opt for a larger plane to fly on and request a seat close to the wings with a window. If you have a prescription medication, especially if it is a seizure medication, diabetes medication, heart disease medication, or epinephrine medication, ensure that you bring it onto the plane with you in your on-board luggage.

      On Arrival…

Give yourself time to acclimatize, and allow your body to become used to the new time zone and environment. This may include helping your body to adjust to a new environment by wearing more sunscreen to combat heat and wearing clothing that is suitable for the weather. If you are visiting a tropical or otherwise mosquito infested area, wear bug repellent to prevent both mosquito bites and malaria. If you know that the area where you are going is an area where you are likely to acquire malaria, take a malaria-preventative drug before your trip.

      At Mealtimes…

Avoid tap water, or any liquid that you aren’t sure is purified. Drinking contaminated water often leads to diarrhea, which can make vacation rather awkward, if not ruined, pretty quickly. There is no guarantee where you will find that water is not contaminated, so it’s easier to be safe than sorry and stick to carbonated beverages and bottled water instead. When you eat out at restaurants, do not eat your food unless it comes to you hot and well-cooked, in order to prevent stomach upset, possible food poisoning and digestive tract infection. Do not eat any raw fruit or vegetables that you have not washed yourself, as they may have been washed with contaminated water, if they were washed at all.

By following these helpful tips, you will be able to fully enjoy your vacation – without having to worry about any pressing health issues.

      The Dangers of Aspartame

Filed under: cancer — Candace @ 7:33 pm

Diet pop is supposed to be good for you – a sugarless alternative to regular carbonated beverages – unfortunately this is not so.  Since its approval in 1981, aspartame has been constantly in controversy. Although the additive was approved, it has been reported to cause symptoms from headaches to gastrointestinal problems.  Aspartame has been put under an orange label, which means “warning” and it is suggested that you avoid aspartame.

Aspertame is popular because it is a calorie-less sweetener. It is used mostly in advertising because when people read “Zero Calories” the immediate natural response would be positive. Unfortunately no calories is only safe when associated with water. Other than this, most non calorie soft drinks, desserts, cereals, gum, and sweeteners contain aspartame. Although aspartame has been regulated under a title stating it poses no health hazards to people, it is thought untrue. Consumers have found over 92 side effects caused by aspartame. From a document published in 1995 these complaints were made:

      • Almost 10,000 complaints were made in total.
      • Over 1847 complaints were about headaches.
      • 647 complaints were regarding vomiting or nausea
      • 242 people complained of weakness and fatigue.
      • 3021 of the complaints were thought to be caused by diet soft drinks.
      • 1716 of the complaints were thought to be caused by table top sweeteners.

Aspartame in small dosages is not deadly. Excessive consumption of aspartame is thought to be linked to causing cancer. The results of a research study conducted by the National Cancer Institute showed that rats fed food with aspartame developed more cancer and lymphomas than those fed food without aspartame. Although aspartame has been claimed safe for common consumption, the controversy continues.

      The Essentials of Metabolism

Filed under: metabolism — Candace @ 7:32 pm

      What is metabolism?

Metabolism is the amount of calories your body burns to maintain itself. Everyone has a different metabolism but they can be all put on to a spectrum between low metabolism and high metabolism.

What is my type of metabolism and how can I perfect it?

High metabolism and low metabolism are the simplest categories of metabolism. People with low metabolism are called endomorphs. These people find it easy to gain weight. In order to balance their metabolism this group can start by drinking more water and eating smaller sized meals more frequently. Meals should consist of plenty of lean protein, whole wheat products, and fruits and veggies. Exercise is crucial if you have this body type and metabolism.

The perfect bodies – women with the natural hourglass shape, men with natural muscle tone – are referred to as mesomorphs. These people have an adequate metabolism which burns just the right amount of fat. These people can develop muscle easily, and lose weight without effort.  Despite their physical advantage, without the proper amount of exercise and adequate nutrition, mesomorphs can become overweight.

Lastly there are those with high metabolism. These people are slim and petite and are referred to as ectomorphs. They have lean muscle and are often curve-less and have a flat chest with a low amount of body fat. This body type makes it difficult to gain weight, fat, or muscle. These people are not at a risk of obesity, but they do need to keep a healthy diet and exercise lots to keep good overall health.
